About this tour
From November to March, the meltwater rivers under Vatnajökull glacier freeze, revealing crystal-blue ice caves that exist for only that one season — and never twice in the same shape. This is the day-long Reykjavík-to-glacier expedition that gets you inside one.
We're on the road by 7:30 to make the most of the short winter daylight. The drive itself is half the experience — Seljalandsfoss waterfall lit by low winter sun, Reynisfjara's black-sand beach with the Atlantic crashing in, and the long approach across the southern volcanic plain. The cave itself is reached on foot from a small base camp; our local glacier guides handle the technical side.
This is a long day — 14 hours door to door — and the conditions can be cold, wet, and dim. It's also the closest most travellers ever come to walking inside a glacier. Bring layers. We provide crampons and helmets.
